Tribal Proposal for California Sports Betting in 2022

Industry

After years and years and years of opposition from Tribal gaming interests, there has finally been a proposal tat could work for California sports betting. And this time it has the support of Native American gaming, because this time it’s their proposal.

A spokesman for the coalition of tribes backing the initiative, Jacob Mejia, admits that there is no chance for the initiative to find its way to the ballot in 2020 or 2021. The legislature can next place a measure on the June 2022 primary ballot.

The tribal initiative was on pace to qualify for this year’s ballot before the Coronavirus pandemic derailed gathering signatures for the initiative. However, a California judge granted proponents an extension on signature gathering through October 12th.
