Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics (Switch) – Game #22: Blackjack

Blackjack
Game #22 on our list of 51 Worldwide Classics is a card game commonly played at casinos and my personal casino game of choice, Blackjack! In this game, players ante up by betting chips on each hand, and each player and the dealer are then dealt two cards. In the dealer’s case, one is face down while only one is face up only giving you partial information as to the dealer’s hand. The players then go around trying to get their hand as close to 21 as possible without going over. They have three options: Hit (where you ask for another card to get you closer to 21), Stand (where you stay with the hand you have because you either think you’re close enough to 21, or are just betting on the dealer busting), or Double Down (where you double your bet and only get one more card before being forced to stand unlike being able to hit again after hitting the first time). Some casinos also offer the fourth option of Splitting (where if you’re dealt two of the same card in your hand you can double your bet and split that one hand into two. Very effective with two Aces and two Eights especially), but that option is not in this version. If you go over 21, you bust and you lose your bet. After all players have either stood or busted, the dealer reveals their hole card and then plays. The dealer is forced to hit on 16 and below and forced to stand on 17 or above. If the dealer stands on a hand of 17-21, any player higher than that will win their bet, any player lower will lose their bet, and any player that ties the dealer will “push” and just get their bet back with no extra. If the dealer busts, all players that haven’t busted themselves win their bets. If a player is dealt a 21 out of the gate (an Ace and a face card), it’s called a Blackjack, and you will win 1.5x your bet provided the dealer doesn’t have Blackjack themselves (in which case you would push). Some professional tournaments allow you to double down on a blackjack, but I would highly recommend not doing that. Some casinos also offer insurance if the dealer’s up card is an Ace (not in this version, though), but again, I recommend not taking it. It’s a sucker bet.

In blackjack tournament play, players not only compete against the dealer, they also compete against each other as well. After a certain amount of rounds, the participant with the highest chip count wins the grand prize, so there’s some betting strategy involved there as well. The Clubhouse Games version of blackjack operates this way, allowing you either 5 or 10 rounds of play to get the highest chip count on the table.

Because there is a lot of luck involved in this game, there are no adjustable difficulty settings for the AI players, so all you have to do is win once to master the game. Also, the game keeps track of your high score, and each time you play it, you can unlock a piece of trivia about the game. There are two pieces of trivia about Blackjack:

1. This game is just one of many similar card games that are played all around the world.
2. The dealer must continue to hit as long as their hand is worth 16 points or less. Once they reach 17 points, they are forced to stand.

Personal story: My dad and I used to play Hoyle casino CD-ROM games all the time when I was a kid, and between that and watching the World Series of Blackjack on GSN, I’ve memorized the basic strategy card for this game and also learned that blackjack has the lowest house advantage of any casino game when playing basic strategy. So it has become my go-to casino game for my trips to Lake Tahoe.
