London Casinos Closed Over New COVID Strain

Industry

Just as things were starting to look better for 2021, London casinos have been closed again as a new stain of Coronavirus is sweeping through the United Kingdom. The city has been forced into another lock down by the latest surge of COVID-19 infections in what the Mayor described as “deeply troubling”.

The UK Health Secretary said that the mutated strain is not believed to be more dangerous than previous strains, and is highly unlikely to be resistant to vaccines. However, he added that it “appears to be spreading more quickly” and may be responsible for the surge in infections in the region.

The past nine months have been brutal for the UK’s casino industry. The Betting and Gaming Council said in October that lock downs and curfews had left the land-based gaming sector down 70 percent when compared to the same point in 2019.
