New York Yankees Sign Veteran Outfielder Brett Gardner to 1 Year Contract

On Friday, February 19th, 2021 the New York Yankees and their veteran outfielder Brett Gardner have agreed upon terms on a one year contract valued at approximately $4 million. This new deal includes a player option for the second year, and if that player option is rejected then it becomes a team option for the 2022 MLB season. As of now Gardner is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent once again in 2023.

Brett has played for the New York Yankees from 2008 to the present, and he is the only remaining player from the New York Yankees’ last World Series championship which was in 2009. Among active Major League Baseball players Gardner is tied for fifth for the longest tenure with one team as he has been in New York with the Yankees for 14 years including this upcoming 2021 MLB season.

Last year during the COVID – 19 pandemic shortened 2020 MLB season Gardner batted .223 with 15 RBI’s as well as 5 home runs. In 2019 Brett hit a respectable .251 along with career highs in runs batted in and home runs with 74 RBI’s and 28 homers. Gardner has a career batting average of .259 while slugging 129 career home runs, 539 career RBI’s, and 270 career stolen bases.

Brett is looking to help the New York Yankees in any way that he can this year as he is projected to be a bench or utility player for the upcoming 2021 Major League Baseball season. His manager Aaron Boone has stated that Clint Frazier will be the starting left fielder for the New York Yankees this year, at least as of now.
