First Washington State Sports Betting Deal Reached

Industry

Washington State sports betting is closer to reality as the Tulalip Tribe has reached an agreement with the State Gambling Commission. That agreement not only allows the Tribe to accept sports bets, but to actually host some events on their casino property.

This is the first contract for betting on sports in the state, and comes after a year of negotiations. Bets will be taken on both professional and college games, the Olympic games, and e-sports if the events take place on Tribal casino land.

Tulalip Chairwoman Teri Gobin stated that they were “…extremely satisfied with the compact amendment and our ability to work together with the State on this effort to maintain a strong regulatory environment for gaming in Washington State.”

The State Gambling Commission added that the compact is “…a thoughtful approach by the Tribe and State that ensures sports wagering will be conducted with the highest integrity while protecting the public by keeping gambling legal and honest.”

There are several legal processes needed before any live bets can placed, such as legislative hearings in the Senate labor committee, a vote from the state gambling commission, approval from the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, and publishing in the Federal Register.
