Vegas Strike Date Closes In

Industry

There have been some positive developments, even as the Las Vegas strike date is approaching next week. About 8,000 workers in culinary and hospitality positions are threatening to strike if a new agreement is not reached, which had the potential to effect some twenty resorts during the Super Bowl.

Happily, as we believed would happen, some agreements have been reached. It’s a slow process, however, and there may not be time to reach agreements with all the workers before the Vegas strike date deadline of February 2nd. We can take some comfort in knowing that at least six properties will not be involved in a work stoppage.

The resorts which were facing this threat but managed to get new deals in place are Hilton Grand Vacations, The Mirage, The Strat, Trump Hotel, the Waldorf Astoria, and the Westgate. Sadly, that still leaves about sixteen resorts where a strike is possible.

If you’re headed to town for the big game and concerned about the looming Vegas strike date, some the resorts which could see issues are Binion’s, Circa, Downtown Grand, El Cortez, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate, Golden Nugget, Main Street, the Plaza, and The D. All of these are in the Fremont Street area.

Additional resorts facing a walk out are located on The Strip. Those are Circus Circus, Sahara, and Treasure Island. Off Strip properties dealing with the strike are the Rio and Virgin. All workers are asking for new contracts with a significant wage increase, lowered workloads, and protections against technology.

You may recall that back in November there was another Las Vegas strike date set just before the Formula 1 race. Workers were seeking similar new benefits and used the deadline of the race as leverage against the resorts. This time, the union is hoping to use the Super Bowl to achieve similar results.
