Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady in New York started a new, free program to train the next group of table game dealers during their Dealer Academy classes.
The classes began Monday and will run Monday through Friday for the next six weeks. Students learn how to operate roulette, craps, and other table games. The program takes participants of all levels from beginners with no knowledge of table games to those with more experience.
Once they pass their final audition and obtain their NYS gaming license, participants will be offered a part-time or full-time position as a table games dealer at Rivers Casino. Candidates must be able to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.

The casino has 60 slots they are looking to fill for the classes. Officials said they also like to have both internal and external candidates in their classes. Class sizes are small because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials said the classes are needed to set their casino apart from others.
“That’s what sets casinos apart for different casinos,” Rivers Casino Dir. of Table Games Tom Mcowen said, as reported by ABC News10. “You can go to any casino and get a table game or a slot machine, but the people, you can’t get the same people in every casino.”
Rivers Casino offers table games dealers hourly wages and tips in excess of $20 an hour along with a generous benefits package including paid time off, medical/dental/vision plans, a 401(k) plan with company match, tuition reimbursement, and more. A complimentary shuttle bus service from the local CDTA blue line stop is also provided.
