It’s been a long time coming, but several days ago a man suspected of being an MGM hacker was arrested while trying to board a plane in Europe. You probably recall that both MGM and Caesars properties in Las Vegas were the victims of a coordinated cyber attack in September of last year. Now, a British citizen is in custody.
The attack ended up costing millions of dollars for both companies while causing widespread chaos at the effected resorts. It also triggered an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission,which led to a subsequent lawsuit from MGM Resorts against the FTC alleging the investigation infringed upon their right to due process under the Fifth Amendment.
Spanish national police recently apprehended a man they suspect is an MGM hacker at Palma Airport in Spain. According to a source at the Murcia Today publication, he was intercepted while attempting to board a flight bound for Italy. The FBI’s Los Angeles field office had issued an arrest warrant for the 22-year-old UK national, as reported by CyberNews.
The MGM hacker is allegedly part of a group known as Scattered Spider, and is reportedly responsible for the Caesars and MGM cyberattack, as well as others carried out against numerous large corporations. The arrested individual is accused of hacking into corporate accounts and managing $27 million in Bitcoin.
